A pastoral life sim laced with folk dread from the Yomawari team has become one of Nippon Ichi Software's fastest-selling domestic launches in recent memory.

100,000 Copies in Four Days

Village in the Shade sold over 100,000 copies within four days of its July 30 release in Japan, as announced by Nippon Ichi Software on August 3. The publisher also apologized for widespread stock shortages at brick-and-mortar retailers across the country and confirmed that new shipments were being prepared.

Physical Editions Vanish From Shelves

Retailers throughout Japan ran out of physical copies shortly after launch. Nippon Ichi Software attributed the shortage to demand exceeding initial distribution forecasts and urged patience from customers waiting on restocks. No timeline for full availability was given.

Life in Kagatsu Village

The game sets players in Kagatsu, a remote Japanese mountain settlement where the daily loop revolves around crop cultivation, fishing, hunting, and animal husbandry. Community interaction forms the social backbone of village life. After dark, however, the village's unspoken rules carry consequences the farming calendar does not prepare you for.

Folk Horror Over Jump Scares

Nippon Ichi Software designed Village in the Shade around atmospheric unease rather than gore or sudden shocks. The game earned a CERO C rating (ages 15+), and the developers have described their approach as rooted in the uncanniness of Kagatsu and hints of folk horror woven into the setting. Classic horror tropes take a back seat to the slow creep of wrongness.

Peaceful Life Mode Sidesteps the Dread

Players averse to horror can activate Peaceful Life Mode, which strips out scary events entirely and leaves only the farming simulation. The feature effectively makes Village in the Shade two games in one: a cozy agricultural life sim and a folk-horror experience, selectable at the start screen.

Western Release Slated for Fall 2026

The global version arrives fall 2026 on PC (Steam), PS5, and Nintendo Switch. The PC build supports English, French, Spanish, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, and Korean. Console versions carry English, French, and Spanish localization. No pricing or exact date has been announced.

From Yomawari to the Farm

Nippon Ichi Software developed Village in the Shade with the same team behind the Yomawari horror series. That pedigree generated significant attention from announcement onward, as the studio pitched a game whose cozy surface belies the kind of dark turns fans associate with its previous work. The sales figures suggest that contradiction resonated with Japanese players.
